Lower
back pain experienced by new mothers can be attributed to the many
physical changes that take place during and after pregnancy. Here are
simple ways to alleviate lower back pain for newly minted mums:
Maintain
proper posture
You
may be so focused on positioning your baby to latch correctly or just
plain tired that you don’t notice you’re already slouching. Such
a position stresses your neck and back. Maintain an upright posture,
and use pillows or armrests for comfortable support. If you have
tense shoulders and upper back pain, you can try the side-lying
breastfeeding position.
Alternate
carrying arm
When
you carry your baby on one side of your body for a long period of
time, you’ll tend to have a lopsided posture that causes a lot of
pain. Switch carrying arms so both sides of the body get a fair share
of the effort.
Go
physical
Mild
exercise such as walking and stretches that strengthen the back and
abdominal muscles are highly recommended. However, get your
caregiver’s approval first. Listen to your body; if you feel severe
pain during the activity, stop.
Lighten
the load
Most
mothers carry their stuffed nappy bag, shoulder bag, and baby all at
the same time. The combined weight along with poor distribution
results into back pain. Pack only what’s necessary for an outside
stroll and leave the extras in the car. The choice of designer nappy
bags that fuse style and functionality, eliminates your need for a
handbag.
